Correction, September 30, 2026: an earlier version of this review listed the wrong active ingredients. Amazon Basics Flea and Tick Topical Treatment for dogs contains fipronil and (S)-methoprene. It does not contain afoxolaner, fluralaner or permethrin. This review has been fully rewritten and checked.
Quick answer: Amazon Basics Flea and Tick Topical Treatment is a budget monthly spot-on for dogs 8 weeks and older. It uses fipronil and (S)-methoprene, the same two active ingredients as Frontline Plus. It kills adult fleas, flea eggs and larvae, ticks and chewing lice. The Large size covers dogs 45 to 88 lbs, and a 6-pack lasts 6 months. For hunting dog owners it’s a good value, especially in multi-dog kennels. It doesn’t repel ticks or prevent heartworm, though, so post-hunt tick checks still matter.

Amazon Basics Flea and Tick (Large): the specs
| Active ingredients | Fipronil and (S)-methoprene. Check the box for exact percentages. |
|---|---|
| Brand-name equivalent | Same active ingredients as Frontline Plus for Dogs |
| Weight range (Large) | 45 to 88 lbs. Small, medium and extra-large sizes are sold separately. |
| Minimum age | 8 weeks |
| Doses | 6 monthly applications |
| Kills | Adult fleas, flea eggs and larvae, ticks, chewing lice |
| Does NOT do | Repel ticks before they bite, prevent heartworm, or treat intestinal worms |
How it works
- Fipronil spreads through the oils in the skin and coat and kills adult fleas and ticks that come in contact with it.
- (S)-methoprene is an insect growth regulator. It stops flea eggs and larvae from developing, which breaks the flea life cycle in the kennel and the house.
Because fipronil kills ticks after they contact the dog and doesn’t repel them, some ticks may attach before they die. Blacklegged ticks generally need 24 to 48 hours of feeding to pass Lyme disease, so same-day tick checks are still important. See our post-hunt tick check routine.
Is it a good choice for hunting dogs?
Where it shines
- Price. It usually costs far less per dose than the brand-name product with the same actives, which adds up fast in a kennel of three or four dogs.
- No prescription. Easy to keep stocked before the season.
- Breaks the flea cycle. The growth regulator helps keep fleas from taking over kennels and dog trucks.
Where it falls short
- Water dogs. Like most spot-ons, plan applications around bathing and swimming. Many fipronil labels say to wait about 48 hours before bathing. A retriever in the water every day of duck season may do better with an oral product. Ask your vet.
- No repellent effect. A collar like Seresto repels as well as kills.
- No heartworm protection. You still need a separate heartworm preventive.
How to apply it correctly
- Weigh the dog and buy the right size. Don’t split or combine doses across weight ranges.
- Apply to dry skin, not hair. Part the coat between the shoulder blades, where the dog can’t lick. On big dogs, some labels allow applying in a couple of spots down the back. Follow your box.
- Keep it dry for the time on the label. Schedule applications so they don’t land right before a water hunt.
- Keep dogs apart until it dries so housemates don’t lick each other.
- Write the date down on the prevention card in your truck kit and repeat monthly.

Safety notes
- Use only on dogs 8 weeks and older, in the correct weight range.
- Never use dog flea products on cats unless the label says it’s safe for cats.
- Watch for skin irritation, drooling or unusual behavior after applying. If you see a reaction, bathe the area with mild soap and call your vet.
- Talk to your vet before using any flea and tick product on dogs that are old, sick, pregnant, nursing or on other medications.

Our verdict
For upland dogs and hounds, and for kennels running several dogs, Amazon Basics Flea and Tick Topical gives you proven Frontline Plus actives at a lower price. Pair it with a post-hunt tick check and a heartworm preventive. If your dog swims constantly or you want tick repellency, compare it with a collar or an oral product.
