Hunter Shares Passion for Bows, Friendship in New Memoir; Book by Tom Kidwell

Another Old Bowhunter by Tom Kidwell

Bowhunter Tom Kidwell has a way with stories, hooking readers with the very first chapter in this new memoir from Dog Ear Publishing.

This collection of stories by Kidwell and a few of his close friends begins with his ill-conceived attempt to use a compound bow. While closing in on a group of deer in the mountains of Virginia, he finds a complete Indian arrowhead directly in his path. This link to a fellow hunter from ages past jolts Kidwell to his core, and he makes the 3 ½-hour drive back home to retrieve his recurve bow and quiver before resuming the hunt.

Another Old Bowhunter” offers other stories that are just as compelling as Kidwell invites readers to grab a cup of their “favorite campfire juice, pull up a chair, and gather around the fire.” Friend George Stout, who first fashioned a bow in 1954, shares recollections of using a longbow, and Wallace Tracy relays a story about what can happen when hunters don’t take precautions. Kidwell tells how to recognize a typical bowhunter’s home; although tree stands could belong to any hunter, it’s the den that provides the telling clues – mounts hanging from the wall and at least one bow rack.

Whether reminiscing about equipment or the thrill of the hunt, the author’s passion for bowhunting shines through this intriguing memoir filled with striking black and white photos. Although the hunting stories vary, one theme is constant: the celebration of brotherhood. As Dr. H. Norman Stillwell writes in the foreword, “For those folks who have not shared a campfire with Tom, and have not seen the glimmer in his eyes as he recalls past hunts and cherished friendships, perhaps you can sample some of the camaraderie, some of the laughter, and some of the inevitable bonding within the pages of this book.”

Author Tom Kidwell live in southwestern Oklahoma, where he works as a cowhand on a ranch. He is a member of Comanche Masonic Lodge 41. He semi-retired there after working in the corporate world. Kidwell previously wrote “Just Another Old Bowhunter.”
