Do Deer Smell Hunting Blinds? The Surprising Truth

There’s a lot of debate surrounding whether or not deer can smell hunting blinds.

Some people say that they definitely can, while others are convinced that the deer cannot detect human scent at all. So, what’s the truth? In this blog post, we’ll take a look at some of the research done on this topic and try to answer the question once and for all!

One study that is often cited when it comes to this topic was conducted by Dr. Karl V. Miller in 1992. In his study, he found that deer could indeed smell human scent and that they avoided areas where they detected it. However, it’s important to note that the deer in this study were captive animals, so they may have reacted differently than wild deer would.

In a more recent study, researchers from the University of Georgia set out to test whether or not deer could avoid hunting blinds that contained human scent. They found that the deer did indeed avoid these areas, but only when they were downwind from them. When the wind was blowing in a different direction, the deer didn’t seem to care about the hunting blinds at all.

So, what does this all mean? It seems that deer can smell human scent, but they don’t always avoid areas where it’s present. If you’re planning on hunting from a box stand or ground blind, make sure to pay attention to the wind direction and try to position yourself so that the deer won’t be able to smell you.

In Conclusion

Yes, deer can smell hunting blinds. However, they are not always able to avoid them. If you position yourself downwind from the deer, they will be less likely to smell you and more likely to walk right to your hunting blind or box stand!
