Alright, fellow outdoorsmen and women, as soon as the snow starts to pull back and the days stretch out, I know what’s on many of your minds: shed season. There’s something special about finding a dropped antler—it’s like discoverin a hidden treasure, a tangable piece of the wild story. We all want to get out there and scour the backcountry, and for many of us, that means firing up the off-highway vehicle (OHV) to cover some ground.
But as the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) recently reminded us, if you’re using an OHV in your search, you absolutely must stay on established roads and trails. This isn’t just about followin the rules; it’s about being a true conservationist and ensuring we don’t ruin the very habitat we love. Its about respectin the land we hunt on.
The Unseen Damage: Why Your Tracks Matter
I remember years ago, before I truly understood the impact, I might’ve been tempted to cut a corner here or there, especially if the ground looked firm. But an old-timer once told me, “Every track you leave off-trail is a scar on the land that takes longer to heal than your own grandkids will live.” He was right.
The AZGFD highlighted this perfectly: “The resulting habitat damage caused by those driving off-trail can take more than 100 years to recover, especially if the area traveled is covered with snow or is muddy from snowmelt.” Think about that. A quick shortcut for you could be a century-long problem for the soil, the plants, and the small critters that call that spot home. Vehicle tracks also act like an open invitation—if others see tracks, they might think it’s fair game to drive wherever, leadin to even more widespread destruction of pristine areas.
Wildlife Needs Their Space (Especially in Spring)
Shed Hunting Season usually kicks off in early spring. This is a crucial time for deer and elk. They’ve just been through winter, there energy reserves are low, and the does are often pregnant. They need quiet, undisturbed areas to recover and prepare for the new fawns and calves that are on the way.
Excessive noise from off-trail OHVs can easily startle these animals, pushin them out of there normal feedin or beddin areas. Stressin them out can have real consequences for there health and survival. As the AZGFD pointed out, “Minimizing impact on habitat is key to successful wildlife conservation.”
Be a Responsible Steward, Not Just a Shed Hunter
My approach now is simple: I use my OHV to get to the general area, and then all sheds are packed out by foot traffic – My Boots on the Ground. This keeps the habitat intact and respects the animals I’m hopin to get a glimpse of. It’s about enjoyin the backcountry without leavin a footprint.
Safety First (Always)
Beyond habitat protection, OHV safety is paramount. The AZGFD emphasizes this, and it’s a message we all need to hear:

Here’s a fact that often gets overlooked, and it’s something every hunter and angler should be proud of: “The Arizona Game and Fish Department receives no general fund tax dollars. The majority of funding to manage more than 800 native wildlife species comes from Arizona’s hunters and anglers.” This comes straight from the AZGFD itself.
That means our license fees, our tag purchases, and even our gear purchases—a portion of that money goes directly back into conservin the wildlife and habitats we enjoy. It’s a powerful reminder that we, as sportsmen and women, are the original conservationists. Let’s act like it.
