[NOTE: I suspect this is a great day for a pointless anecdote. So, here goes…]
I am a patient man. Hella patient. You might not think so, but it’s true. I proved my patience the day I shot this.
There is a strip of land – a nature preserve – that runs the lakefront from Zion to the Wisconsin state line. It’s a beautiful stretch of land honeycombed with bike and walking paths. One time while biking through without my camera I came across a meadow with 9 fawn, 8 doe and a buck looking down at me from a rise.
I couldn’t get a picture that day, but vowed I soon would.
About a week later I was back on the same trail on my bike, accompanied by my camera. That’s when I came across these three. Unphased by a human they stood eating and ignoring. I waited, camera to eye, autofocus engaged waiting for the moment when all three of them had heads up.
After about 5 minutes the one of the right poked his head up. I waited more. In a bit less than five the deer on the other end stuck his head up. But the third one was stubborn. Another five minutes passed and still he ate.
At about the ten minute mark I decided to try another approach. camera still poised at eye level and at the ready, I opened my mouth and yelled “OH HEY – HEY YOU DEER!!!”
This is the resulting photo.
