Late-Season Hunting Opportunities in North Dakota
Upland Game Hunting Season Remains Open
The upland game hunting season in North Dakota will remain open until January 4, 2026, providing ample late-season hunting opportunities. This includes popular game such as pheasants, grouse, and partridge.
Waterfowl Hunting Opportunities
There are also late-season waterfowl options available. According to Cayla Bendel, North Dakota Game and Fish marketing coordinator, “Depending on your zone, light geese seasons run through January 4th, while Canada goose seasons vary by region, closing at different dates throughout December.”
Other Late-Season Hunting and Trapping Options
In addition to upland game and waterfowl, hunters can explore various late-season hunting and trapping possibilities. The archery season is available through January 4th, and the squirrel season has been extended until February 28th. Coyote hunting is open year-round, while other furbearers offer trapping and night hunting opportunities, depending on the species and devices used.
Safety Precautions While Hunting on Ice
When walking on or near ice, it’s crucial to take safety precautions. Bendel advises, “Check ice conditions. Cattail edges may not be as firm, and ensure there’s solid ice of at least four inches before crossing any frozen surfaces.”
Preparing for Cold Weather Conditions
If you’re planning to hunt during the late season, be prepared for colder weather. Bendel states, “Let others know your plans, avoid hunting alone, and keep extra layers and emergency supplies in your vehicle. Be cautious on snowy roads and avoid driving on uncertain paths.”
