Columbian black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) in Horsetail Grass

OLYMPUS DIGITAL camera

This is so long ago, but I still remember actually taking the picture. Talk about the Dark Ages: I had no idea about digital cameras or how much money I could spend on a good one;-)

This Columbian Black-tailed deer is endemic to southern portions of California. And probably Columbia. Otherwise…

This shot was taken at Sequoia NP which, at last look,is one of the least visited national parks in NA. In 2016, the visitors number just a tad over a million. In 2010, it was 700,000. And when this shot was taken, there were my wife and me, seven rangers, and one bear holding a sign that warned against forest fires.

This is one of our all-time favorite parks. However, in the northern part (that abuts Kings Canyon NP and Yosemite), the best hiking trails with views of the Western Divide and Mt. Whitney the climb to get a view is from 5,000 to 8,084 feet. Can’t do that anymore. Btw, this is also the location for the Acmon Butterfly (about an inch across) and Black and White Swallowtail mating seasons.
